'GIVE GEOGRAPHY ITS PLACE'

MEDIA CONTACTS

Here are some of the media responses that we have received so far.... KEY: Yellow = GGiP e-mails, Green = media replies

The third one relates to an e-mail sent by Daniel Raven-Ellison to the BBC concerning the programme 'Journeys into the Ring of Fire'

(No copy of the original e-mail at present)

Dear Daniel Raven-Ellison.

Thank you for your e-mail regarding Journeys into the Ring of Fire. As someone who is very enthusiastic about geography and studied it for a university degree, I understand your point of view and I found the website very interesting. Our presenter, Dr Iain Stewart, is a geologist and his thesis is that the history of the world is driven by the rocks beneath our feet. The series has a cross-genre approach, drawing on many subjects such as anthropology, history and even psychology in our California episode. There's no doubt a strong geographical element and you are of course absolutely right - we could indeed label the series as 'geography.' However, since Iain is a geologist, the two labels he tends to use are 'geology' and 'history.' Whatever the title, I hope the series will ignite people's interest in geography, as well as the other subjects Iain touches on. And I hope you enjoy it.

Best regards,
Jeremy Phillips
(Series Producer, Journeys into the Ring of Fire)

Dear Jeremy,

Thank you so much for your kind reply. I like other geographers have
written to the BBC about several programmes and I must say that you
response has been the most supportive and understanding. The only
thing I might say is that it is the very bridging of all of these
topics that does frequently make programmes 'geography'.

I am very much looking forward to watching the programme. Thank you
for producing what I am sure will be an excellent series and
responding personally.

Kind regards,

Daniel
